The Watcher Following on from March of the Satelli The Watcher
Following on from March of the Satellites, this shot was taken later along Brindabella Road. Same place, same night — just me, PTK Crew, and the quiet hum of the night beneath the Milky Way.

Capturing this is its own kind of cardio workout — sprinting into position inside a 10-second timer, hoping everything lines up before the shutter closes. It's always worth every heartbeat.

There’s something grounding about standing beneath a sky like this, feeling the weight of the universe above while satellites trace their fleeting paths through it. A reminder of both our connection to the stars and how quickly the world around us is changing.

March of the Satellites There was a time when sta March of the Satellites

There was a time when standing under the night sky brought a sense of ancient stillness—stars and silence, galaxies and wonder. But on this night along Brindabella Road in the ACT, that stillness felt different.

In this single 10-second exposure, you can see it clearly—thin white scars across the Milky Way. A sky once ruled by nature is now busy with the march of satellites.

I shot this just above the PTKCrew spot, and what you’re seeing isn’t planes or shooting stars—these are satellites, dozens of them, quietly carving pathways through the stars. They’re a sign of how quickly our world is changing.

I’ll be honest—I’m torn. After my health scare, having Starlink with me on remote trips has been priceless. Knowing I can call for help no matter where I am brings peace of mind that’s hard to give up. But as someone who lives for nights like this, untouched by city lights, I can’t help but feel uneasy watching the sky become crowded. Progress has a price—and it’s starting to show in our photos, our science, and our connection to the night itself.

Maybe the sky isn’t lost—yet—but it’s changing, one satellite at a time.

Throwback Thursday – Cracked Universe Some imag Throwback Thursday – Cracked Universe

Some images stay with you longer than others — this is one of them. While setting up for a shoot on a property near Narooma, this lone dead tree caught my attention. I’ve always been drawn to the character of dead trees — weathered by time, scarred by storms, yet still standing. There’s a story in every twisted branch.

I checked the sky alignment and realised the Milky Way would rise right behind it — too good to ignore. I set up, waited, and watched as the galaxy slowly climbed into position. What I didn’t expect was how the branches, silhouetted against the galactic core, would look like cracks splitting open the universe. A mate later described it exactly that way — “like the universe is breaking apart” — and the name stuck.

La Luna in Bermi At 89.1%, the moon rose over the La Luna in Bermi

At 89.1%, the moon rose over the Pacific Ocean as I stood on the cliffs around Bermagui on Saturday evening, hoping to capture some shots of a few whales. They had some fun in the swell, came and went, but La Luna lingered — steady, bright, and beautiful.

There’s always something mesmerising about photographing the moon — simple, familiar, yet endlessly captivating.
