Hold Still Photography

A look back at 2025 A year that held both light a A look back at 2025

A year that held both light and shadow.

From standing under aurora-lit skies and the Milky Way, to being pressed up against stages capturing raw energy from some incredible bands — 2025 reminded me why I fell in love with photography in the first place. Whether it was the quiet magic of the night sky or the controlled chaos of live music, each moment asked me to slow down, observe, and feel.

The second half of the year went quieter than planned. Some big and unexpected life changes meant I had to step back, pause workshops, and focus on recovery. That space wasn’t easy, but it brought clarity — and perspective. I cannot thank enough my wonderful wife Tracey, whose support and love helped me keep on track to full strength.

I’m incredibly grateful to still have had my work recognised by the International Photography Awards and Australian Photography, and to have worked alongside some amazing bands and people along the way.

Thank you to everyone who supported me this year — through likes, messages, shared moments, workshops, or just quiet encouragement. It never goes unnoticed.

Looking ahead to 2026, I’m genuinely excited. I’m grateful to be here, feeling stronger, and looking forward to gradually increasing my time behind the lens as the year unfolds. I can’t wait to roll out new workshop offerings via the website and spend more time doing what I love — whether that’s out under dark skies or in front of a stage.

Here’s to an inspiring, creative, and meaningful 2026 for all of us. 🌌🎶 Happy New Year 🥳

Emu Rising – Summer Milky Way From the same quiet Emu Rising – Summer Milky Way

From the same quiet stretch of road where November’s Aurora Australis lit up the sky, I headed out again with hope in my pocket. Several CMEs were inbound, and with a narrow two-hour window before the waning gibbous Moon climbed above the horizon, I took the chance to rework some compositions — quietly wishing the aurora might strike twice at the same location.

This time, it didn’t.
The aurora waited until the following night… when cloud cover hit 100%.

But the night still delivered.

Instead of colour, the Summer Milky Way took centre stage — subtle, detailed, and endlessly rewarding. To the right, satellites carved their familiar paths across the sky, while this striking dead tree anchored the frame. From its branches, the Emu’s head emerges, leading your eye toward the magnificent Carina Nebula, glowing softly in the background. And if you look closely, a small meteor tried (unsuccessfully) to hide behind the tree.

Magic still abounds in the night sky — not always loud or colourful, but always present — if we slow down and take the time to truly observe.

Machine Head rolled into UCLivex last night for th Machine Head rolled into UCLivex last night for their Good Things Festival sideshow, and I was lucky enough to capture the chaos for Metal-Roos.

With the unexpected shift to performing as a three-piece, you might’ve wondered how the set would land — but Robb Flynn and crew didn’t just rise to the challenge… they obliterated it.

No support acts.
No filler.
No bullshit.
Just pure, unrelenting power from the first note to the last.

The stripped-back lineup only sharpened the edges — tighter riffs, heavier grooves, and a level of intensity I haven’t seen in a long time. And judging by the reactions from everyone I ran into on the night, it wasn’t just me… they absolutely crushed it.

Aurora in Motion After sharing a the stills from Aurora in Motion

After sharing a the stills from the night, here’s the moment where everything finally comes together — a timelapse of the Aurora Australis from that incredible evening on 12 November.

What made this night so unforgettable wasn’t just the colour, but the movement:
the SAR arc glowing steadily across the sky,
the active beams punching upward, and
the clouds rushing through Namadgi as if trying to keep pace with the show above.
Even the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds drifted through frame in perfect clarity, reminding me why this region is such a gift for nightscaper work.

Watching it back, you really get a sense of just how alive the southern sky was — far more than a single frame could show.

Just a reminder when you get nights like this, it's always handy having a @jamesbaroud_aunz Roof Top Tent on @p.t.k._crew available in case the night keeps giving like this, I can safely find a place to crash.

More Southern Sky Magic Following on from last we More Southern Sky Magic

Following on from last week’s images, here’s another mini panorama from the unforgettable night of 12 November. This one was taken later in the evening, after the colours had deepened and the sky really came alive.

The SAR arc was still glowing strong, but what made this frame even more special was catching both the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds rising clear and bright above the landscape. Add in the active beams dancing across the sky at the time and it became one of those rare nights where every direction held something happening.

Also making its debut in this shot: my new Hold Still Photography watermark, a little nod to the continued growth of both my astro and music photography work. It feels right to mark images like this with it — scenes that remind me exactly why I keep heading out into the dark.

Calm Before the Storm at Camel Rock 🌧️🪨 A moment Calm Before the Storm at Camel Rock 🌧️🪨

A moment of contrast along the Sapphire Coast — the tide pool in front of me sat perfectly still, its clear water revealing seaweed and stones below, untouched by the chaos building just beyond.

Out behind Camel Rock, the ocean moving in rhythmic rolls while the storm clouds began stacking fast, rain out behind those jagged peaks. Yet here, in this small sheltered pocket, everything was calm. It’s amazing how the coastline can offer two completely different worlds only metres apart.
