The Emu is Watching!

A faint hint of just airglow or was it lingering Aurora Australis still — captured around 75 minutes after a major GW surge lit up the Hemispheric Power charts. Did the southern sky still have one last breath to share?

The Emu in the Sky, formed from the dark dust lanes of the Milky Way, watched from above. Below, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds framed the tree perfectly — a quiet, powerful reminder of the beauty just overhead.

My first capture of the Aurora Australis — taken last year just outside of Hoskinstown. It was one of those still, freezing nights where everything just lined up. The southern lights danced low on the horizon, right beneath the Magellanic Clouds. I’d been chasing aurora alerts for a while, but seeing it with my own eyes was something else entirely.

Even with work the next day, I couldn’t pass up

Even with work the next day, I couldn’t pass up a night like this. Stayed closer to home at a spot I’ve visited a few times, but that didn’t make it any less magical. The skies were clear, the stars were blazing, and I used the chance to slow down, take it all in, and work on some hyperfocal distance shots under the Milky Way.

The @jamesbaroud_aunz Evasion rooftop tent continues to prove its worth — having a comfy setup ready to go means I can chase the stars as long as I need to, then crash right there. Want to know more about the tent setup? Hit me up with your questions!

Back to Brayshaws 🛖✨

Almost 14 months on from the night that changed everything — when this humble hut under the stars became the subject of my IPA International Award-winning photo (https://www.photoawards.com/winner/zoom.php?eid=8-1686635126-23).

Returning to this spot felt like coming full circle. Same hut. Same vast, silent valley. But this time, the skies were crystal clear, revealing the full arc of the Milky Way overhead — and even a cheeky visit from the Magellanic Clouds.

This panorama was about honouring the moment, the memory, and the continuing magic of our southern skies. A favourite place of mine, and I'm sure it will be the subject of many more forays to the South of the ACT.
